Miranda Lambert fans in Atlanta got more than they bargained for at her concert on Saturday night (Jan. 20), when the singer and her band burst into a high-energy cover of the Joe Walsh classic “Rocky Mountain Way.” Lambert struts the stage and does the heavy song justice with a high-octane vocal performance, but the focus of much of the arrangement is her band members — especially her steel player, Spencer Cullum, Jr., who added a jaw-dropping pedal steel recreation of Walsh’s iconic talkbox solo. She took the opportunity to introduce her band to the crowd over the slow, heavy pulse of the beat, and her guitarists also got to strut their stuff in extended slide guitar passages. Thomas Rhett‘s new single “Unforgettable” is another remarkably contagious love song from a singer skilled in the art of the understatement. There’s a distinct, disarming charm that comes with the best Thomas Rhett songs, and while he flips between and across genres, he’ll usually pull it back between the lines the next time. An acoustic riff pins this mostly organic new offering from his upcoming Life Changes album. “Unforgettable” is a breezy country train that picks up steam at each chorus before releasing a burst to begin a new verse. It’s refreshing, and at barely two-and-a-half minutes, it leaves you wanting more. You can hear it here.
